Distilled Style (Layer 3)
RENDERING: Smooth, ceramic-like primary surfaces with high glossiness and intense light reflections. Fine granular sparkle texture like gold dust or micro-glitter overlaid on glossy forms, catching directional light. Organic elements range from matte-satin to subtly translucent. Plush, fabric-like layered foreground pieces with soft undulations. Rocky surfaces rough and craggy with semi-glossy highlights. Pearlescent and iridescent sheens on hard smooth surfaces with visible color-shifting. Wide material diversity: rubbery, ceramic, porous, ridged, smooth, granular. LIGHT: Strong directional warm golden light from above-left creating prominent volumetric light rays visible through the medium. Shimmering caustic patterns cast on ground surfaces. High-gloss surfaces produce crisp, almost mirror-like specular reflections. Subsurface scattering on organic forms. Warm color temperature at source transitioning to cool blues-greens in shadows and distance. NEGATIVE: No flat matte digital surfaces. No uniform unvaried lighting. No hard geometric edges on organic forms. No paper or fiber textures. No torn or rough-cut edges. No watercolor wash effects.
RENDERING: Simulated layered media, appearing as torn paper or fabric, with irregular, feathery edges. Features watercolor-like washes, blending, and transparency with subtle granulation. Elements exhibit digital crispness, precise glows, sharp details, and smooth gradients. Includes highly translucent, ethereal forms, metallic, glossy, and iridescent surfaces, alongside matte, rough, and porous textures. Branching forms have a smooth, waxy quality, while delicate tentacled textures and subtle scale-like patterns are also present. LIGHT: Strong, directional warm light from the upper-left, casting soft shadows and highlights. Features subtle caustics, reflections on glossy surfaces, and refractions through translucent media. Prominent warm and cool emissive glows create halo effects and illuminate surroundings, with faint glow from scattered particles. Subsurface scattering lends a soft luminosity. Volumetric light rays and haze contribute to atmospheric depth. Light transitions from warm (yellow/orange) to cool (blue/purple) across the scene. DEPTH: Achieved through simulated layered materials, creating distinct foreground, midground, and background. Atmospheric perspective is strong, with background elements exhibiting cooler colors, less distinct values, and softened details. Subtle haze and murkiness, along with scattered shimmering particulates, enhance the atmospheric effect. Large, layered foreground elements often frame the composition. COLOR AESTHETIC: Clear temperature transitions from warm (reds, oranges, yellows) to cool (greens, blues, purples) establish depth and mood. High saturation in foreground/midground gradually desaturates and mutes in the background. Strong value contrasts between brightly lit and darker areas, with emissive elements providing high contrast. Depth is primarily conveyed by the shift from warm, bright, saturated colors to cool, darker, desaturated colors. Iridescent elements introduce a full spectrum of colors. SURFACE QUALITY: Dominant irregular, feathery, or jagged edges on layered materials. Soft washes with subtle pigment variations and occasional granulation. Subtle directional strokes contribute an organic feel. Metallic shimmer, iridescence, and pearlescent qualities catch light. Clear interplay between opaque and translucent elements. Subtle ripples and light patterns on reflective surfaces. Bumpy, convoluted, and porous textures are present. REALISM ANCHORS: Convincing mimicry of physical media like torn paper and watercolor. Believable light interaction including caustics, subsurface scattering, and volumetric effects. Authentic textural details like irregular edges, subtle pigment variations, and porous surfaces. Consistent rendering of light and shadow across diverse materials. NEGATIVE: No flat, untextured surfaces. No simplistic, blocky forms. No overtly abstract or non-representational elements. No stark, unblended color fields. No uniform, unvaried lighting. Full bleed 2:1 landscape. Photographed mixed-media artwork. SCENE: Dense shallow Hawaiian coral reef filling the entire frame edge to edge. Bright warm sunlight from above creates caustic patterns on the sandy seabed. The reef is packed with colorful coral formations — branching staghorn coral, brain coral, fan coral, tube sponges — in oranges, pinks, yellows, and greens. Schools of tropical fish weave between the coral: yellow tangs, clownfish in anemones, Moorish idols, butterflyfish pairs. A sea turtle glides overhead in the mid-distance. On the left side, Ollie peeks out from behind a large coral formation, partially hidden, with just his head and two arms visible. On the right side, Dot sits among scattered shells and coral rubble on the sandy bottom, her glow giving her away. The reef is vast and the characters are small within it. OLLIE: Golden-amber baby octopus with smooth gradient skin (#E8A735 to cream). Fine small gold foil stipple dots scattered across his skin — shimmering metallic gold, orange, yellow, and white micro-dots like hand-applied gold leaf. Stipple is densest on outer perimeter of head and tentacles, decreasing toward face. Face is smooth with just a few tiny freckle-dots between eyes. Big round dark pill-shaped pupils with gold foil iris — metallic gold ring around each pupil with natural light glimmer and small white reflections. Both eyes aligned, looking in the same direction. Small gentle curved mouth, rosy-pink cheeks, smooth perfectly rounded plump head. Eight flowing soft-curved arms. ONLY ONE octopus in the scene. DOT: Solid natural Tahitian pearl, smooth perfectly round polished nacre surface with iridescent mother-of-pearl sheen reflecting surrounding environment colors. Golf-ball sized relative to Ollie. EYES: Two soft yellow arc shapes — warm yellow light glowing from INSIDE the pearl surface, projected through the nacre. The arcs are gentle curves of pure light emanating from within, not drawn or painted on the surface. Warm yellow-gold glow, subtle. ONLY ONE pearl in the scene. Always facing toward Ollie, engaged in the scene. ENVIRONMENT: Dense shallow reef. Warm golden sunlight filtering through the surface above. Caustic light patterns on the sand. Abundant marine life throughout. Strong warm-to-cool color gradient from the sunlit foreground to the deeper blue background. Tiny bubbles and particles suspended in the water column.

LIGHT: Directional overhead light penetrates as distinct, parallel volumetric rays. Color temperature shifts from cooler, bluish-white at the surface to warmer, saturated blues and purples in deeper areas. Soft organic forms show subtle subsurface scattering. Shadows are soft, diffuse, and cast downwards. NEGATIVE: No flat, untextured surfaces. No harsh, unrealistic lighting. No overly simplistic forms. No flat, two-dimensional appearance.
RENDERING: Organic forms possess a sculptural, bas-relief quality with smooth, subtly sheened surfaces suggesting a healthy, wet vitality. Complex organic structures exhibit diverse textures: matte and porous with vibrant, painted colors, contrasted by subtle metallic or iridescent embellishments. Other areas are granular with slight translucency at edges. Soft organic forms are fleshy, gently undulating, with visible folds and creases, implying a gelatinous or rubbery texture. Inorganic particulates are smooth and glossy, or rough and granular. A translucent medium features soft gradients and watercolor-like textures in deeper areas. Highly translucent, reflective spheres are clear, smooth, refracting and reflecting light with subtle internal textures. LIGHT: Directional overhead light penetrates as distinct, parallel volumetric rays, illuminating upper forms. Light scatters through the medium, visible as these rays. Color temperature shifts from cooler, bluish-white at the surface to warmer, saturated blues and purples in deeper areas. Illuminated forms are brighter and warmer (yellows, oranges), while shadows are cooler and deeper. Spheres exhibit reflection and refraction, distorting views. Soft organic forms show subtle subsurface scattering, creating a soft, glowing edge. Shadows are soft, diffuse, and cast downwards, consistent with a light-scattering environment. DEPTH: Multiple layers comprise indistinct background forms, mid-ground structures, foreground elements, and floating particulates. Distant elements are softer, less detailed, and desaturated, shifting towards the dominant cool background hue, simulating atmospheric haze. Translucent spheres function as visual particles, adding to a dynamic environment. COLOR AESTHETIC: Dominant cool blues, from deep indigo to vibrant near-surface tones. Warm accents (yellows, oranges, pinks, reds) strategically highlight focal elements, creating strong contrast. Saturation decreases with depth and distance. A wide value range, from bright highlights to deep shadows, enhances depth. Lighter, brighter blues at the top transition to darker, muted blues at the bottom, creating deep space. SURFACE QUALITY: Surfaces are smooth with subtle sheens, or matte and porous. Granular textures are present. A very fine, almost imperceptible grain or noise across darker areas prevents a perfectly flat digital look. Subtle metallic shimmer or iridescence catches light on specific embellishments. Variable opacity, especially in translucent mediums and soft organic forms, reveals internal structure and light interaction. REALISM ANCHORS: The sculptural, bas-relief quality of forms. Diverse and convincing textures, from matte porosity to granular roughness and gelatinous folds. Realistic light interaction, including volumetric scattering, subsurface scattering, and accurate reflections/refractions. Soft, diffuse shadows. Fine grain/noise across darker areas. The nuanced color temperature gradient. NEGATIVE: No flat, untextured surfaces. No harsh, unrealistic lighting. No overly simplistic forms. No flat, two-dimensional appearance. No primary focus on specific characters or narratives. Full bleed 2:1 landscape. Photographed mixed-media artwork. SCENE: Dense shallow Hawaiian coral reef filling the entire frame edge to edge. Overall cool color temperature (blues, purples, pinks) punctuated by warm accents (orange, yellow, magenta). NEGATIVE: No flat, untextured surfaces. No muted or desaturated palettes. No hard, opaque appearances. No strong, singular directional shadows dominating the scene. Not a flat, 2D aesthetic.
RENDERING: Organic forms with pearlescent, translucent bases contrasting sharply with densely textured, iridescent glitter surfaces. Secondary structures range from soft, fleshy, and subtly translucent to rigid, branching forms, all adorned with reflective particles. The implied medium is clear, supporting light scattering. Ground planes mix rocky textures with glowing, glitter-dusted fragments. Materials exhibit sophisticated subsurface scattering for a luminous quality. LIGHT: Pervasive internal luminescence and bioluminescence emanate from nearly every element, particularly tips and edges. Glitter particles function as countless tiny light sources and reflectors, creating strong iridescence and specular highlights. Volumetric light rays, subtly colored, pierce the upper atmosphere. Overall cool color temperature (blues, purples, pinks) is punctuated by warm accents (orange, yellow, magenta). A primary light source from above is suggested, but internal glow largely overrides strong directional shadows. DEPTH: Clear layering from foreground to background, enhanced by subtle blurring and slight desaturation of distant elements. Volumetric light rays and a soft, luminous haze from glowing elements create atmospheric depth. Glitter particles contribute to a shimmering, ethereal atmosphere. COLOR AESTHETIC: Highly saturated and diverse palette. Dominant cool hues (pinks, purples, blues) form environmental tones, contrasted by vibrant warm accents (oranges, yellows, magentas) in foreground and glitter. Strong value contrasts highlight glowing elements against darker bases. Depth is conveyed through warmer, intense foreground colors shifting to cooler, slightly muted background tones. Utilizes both analogous and complementary harmonies. SURFACE QUALITY: Dominant texture is fine, iridescent glitter, rendered as distinct, multi-colored points of light, varying in density. Soft, almost velvety textures on appendage-like forms blend into cohesive organic masses. Underlying structures suggest rougher, calcified textures beneath the glitter. A very fine, almost imperceptible grain or noise adds a subtle photographic quality. REALISM ANCHORS: High fidelity rendering of light interaction, including reflections, subsurface scattering, and volumetric effects, makes fantastical elements feel physically plausible. Smooth color and value transitions, lack of aliasing, and sophisticated material shaders contribute to a high-quality, believable digital aesthetic. Subtle grain prevents sterility. NEGATIVE: No flat, untextured surfaces. No muted or desaturated palettes. No hard, opaque appearances. No strong, singular directional shadows dominating the scene. Not a flat, 2D aesthetic. Metallic spherical forms carry blurred environmental reflections with concentrated specular highlights. LIGHT: Top-down directional light diffused through atmospheric haze, creating both soft overall illumination and sharp intricate caustic patterns projected onto paper surfaces. Visible volumetric light shafts (god rays) cutting through the medium. Color temperature transitions from neutral-warm at source to cooler tones with distance. Self-illuminated elements emit soft warm omnidirectional glow with natural falloff halos. Cool-toned internal bioluminescence creates subsurface scattering in translucent forms. Iridescent surfaces diffract light dynamically. Glowing atmospheric particulate specks suspended throughout. Light is compositional — warm light draws focus, cool light recedes. DEPTH: Explicit torn-paper layering creates tangible diorama depth — each plane separated by visible torn edges with fibrous cross-sections. 5-7 overlapping planes. Atmospheric perspective shifts color from warm-bright-saturated (near) to cool-dark-desaturated (far). Progressive haziness reduces detail and contrast with distance. Foreground elements crop at frame edges, creating immersion — viewer feels inside the scene. Volumetric atmosphere fills space between layers with visible haze and particles. Space is dense, not empty. COLOR AESTHETIC: Strong diagonal warm-to-cool gradient across composition. Near elements carry vibrant warm saturation; far elements shift to deep cool tones. Complementary warm/cool pairing as dominant color structure with tertiary hues bridging extremes. Saturation decreases with depth. Emissive elements maintain high saturation regardless of position. Luminous shadows — dark areas are rich deep cool tones with subtle internal light, never flat or muddy. Wide dynamic range from bright specular highlights through deep glowing darks. SURFACE QUALITY: Fine paper grain visible on flat surfaces. Irregular fibrous torn edges on every paper layer — each tear unique and organic. Watercolor bleed patterns at color boundaries. Paint opacity varies naturally — thicker application in some areas, thinner washes in others. Iridescent metallic medium applied in deliberate hand-varied patches, not uniform overlay. Subtle stippled dot textures on organic skin surfaces. Microscopic material imperfections throughout — nothing is perfectly smooth or mathematically precise. REALISM ANCHORS: Multiple coexisting material types (matte paper, glossy iridescent medium, soft paint washes, hard metallic surfaces, translucent forms) create physical authenticity. Torn paper edges are the strongest materiality cue — they make every layer feel like a real physical sheet. Paint follows physical media rules: bleeds at wet boundaries, absorbs into grain, varies in opacity. Iridescent patches shift with viewing angle like real holographic medium. The artwork looks like a photograph of a physical mixed-media piece under controlled studio lighting, not a screen render. NEGATIVE: NOT uniform smooth digital surfaces. NOT flat single-source lighting. NOT uniform saturation across depth. NOT true black shadows — always luminous deep tones. NOT sharp geometric edges on organic forms. NOT perfectly consistent textures. NOT plastic or rubbery CG feel. NOT posterized flat color fills. NOT airbrushed gradients without texture. NOT symmetrical or mathematically precise compositions. Absolutely NO text, watermarks, or UI elements. Full bleed 2:1 landscape. Photographed mixed-media artwork. SCENE: Wide shot of a dense reef environment stretching edge to edge, teeming with marine life. A small octopus hides on the left among formations, a small pearl hides on the right among rubble. The environment DWARFS them — they are tiny in a vast living puzzle. Full bleed, no margins — the viewer is inside the scene, searching. OLLIE (see character reference image 1): Golden-amber baby octopus with smooth gradient skin (#E8A735 to cream). Gold foil stipple dots scattered across skin — fine, small, metallic gold, orange, yellow, and white dots shimmering like real gold leaf applied by hand. Big round dark pill-shaped pupils with GOLD FOIL IRIS — metallic gold foil ring around each pupil with natural light glimmer. Soft painterly face with warm expression, rosy-pink cheeks, smooth rounded plump head. HIDING behind formations on the left, peeking out, arms curled. Small relative to environment. ONLY ONE octopus in the scene. DOT (see character reference image 2): Solid natural Tahitian pearl, smooth perfectly round polished nacre surface with iridescent mother-of-pearl sheen. EYES: soft ROUNDED SQUINT U-shapes — right-side-up U shapes that are pure warm yellow light GLOWING FROM INSIDE the pearl surface, projected through nacre like light through translucent shell. Golf-ball sized. Warm faint glow. HIDING on the right among rubble. Facing toward Ollie. ONLY ONE pearl in the scene — do not duplicate. ENVIRONMENT: Dense, sprawling reef. Abundant sea life: schooling fish, tropical species in formations, larger marine life passing overhead. Warm light filtering from above.

Verbatim Founder Review — Pre-Batch 2
I need to see the reference images used for each generation. It looks like the character references were only used for the nano banana 2 generation and they look like they were just like stickered on so let's um try just using descriptions based off of the character reference images like maybe use the prompts some of the prompts that we use to make these images the nanobanana 2 the nanobanana pro generation looks drastically different than the nanobanana two generation so i'm wondering what happened there let's generate three images let's generate two each for each model just so we can see like some options gpt image 2 so is still having the heavy texture artifact throughout the image it's like really affecting the image a lot it just kind of looks like this mush like all speckled with this texture and like these bland colors composition of the prompt or what that's creating this but like i don't think we should be like yeah and also this rounded squint u shapes dot's eyes are not u shapes they're yellow arcs so please go find the proper prompting for dot and for ollie so I think we need to take out the children's book. And visible fiber texture from the prompting. The gold foil stipple should only be on Oli. The character should be 3d not gauche painted. So yeah I don't know there's just like a mix of things going on here can you just try again? I mean if we're going for the style extraction I guess it should be gauche painted characters but I think the visible fiber texture is like maybe coming through in this like artifact problem that the model has I think instead of saying things that are more abstract, like a vast living puzzle and where's Waldo underwater challenge, we need to instead prompt this explicit scene. for all of these. We should be describing exactly what the scene composition is, not these like high-level types. As you fix those, let's also try way, extracting the style and testing it on all three models for the sunny reef scene, which was called paper diorama. In the previous batch. Um, let's try to run our new style extraction on this. And The cut paper underwater scene. Actually, instead of the paper diorama scene, why don't you use the sunny reef scene that we have from the previous batch? Those two characters in that image are perfect for Ali and Dot, so use that as like, use like describe them as they are in that image. Not their positioning, but just like their composition. For all of the scenes, this gold stipple dot effect on Oli and the pearl dot with the arc yellow glow arch eyes let's also try our style extraction on Glitter Beast, Bioluminescent Fantasy, and 3D Fantasy Show any image prompts. I don't think we should be using image prompts for any of the next batch of generations. Organize the current page by the reference image like we did on the last batch and show all the details, the extracted... distilled style, the source reference for the style, but then just show each image for each model below that you don't have to repeat the source reference in the style distilled style description. We just want to show all the images that were generated below and you can keep the previous the current versions are on here. You can keep those in like a slideshow. So just show the most current as like V2. And then track any progress, track these comments and the changes that were made for this batch. We want to be numbering the batches. So instead of the last batch, call it instead of labeling. The last batch past batch label that one one and then for current just number it two and have that be the main page
Batch 1 — Extracted style profiles from 2 images (1 pages-ref, 1 midjourney-ref) using Gemini 2.5 Flash. Used a 10-category JSON schema covering medium, color palette, line work, lighting, texture, character rendering, background treatment, mood, constraints, and prompt template. Generated a hide-and-seek scene with each profile using NB2. Results showed clear style differentiation but overall quality was poor.
Batch 2 — Extended to 10 images (mix of pages-refs and midjourney-refs). Extracted style profiles from all 10. First run used old material block combined with extracted style, which caused too much old style bleed. Second run used ONLY the extracted style template plus scene description with no material block. Layout was updated to show full-width generation on top with source ref and style description below. All images still produced cartoon-quality output.
Verbatim Founder Review
These are not showing the styles that we're looking for. They're not capturing the realistic quality of the original images, which look like photographs of real handcraft art pieces and realistic collages with realistic materials. All of the images that have turned out so far are looking like bad cartoons. I don't know if there's any cartoon prompting in these, but you should remove that word and illustration. I don't think that should be used.
I think I need you to update the website showing not only the extracted style but the final prompt used to generate these, because they're definitely not capturing the style from the images in the way that Mid Journey would. I don't see this being a viable path. I think we need to improve the quality of the output. I think for the next batch, we should also try using both nano banana 2 and nano banana pro. First, I want to review the prompt that was used for all of these, and I want you to review what was done and how we can remove this terrible, like cartoon effect that's on all of these images.
We also need to look at the mid-journey style extractions. These images that were provided are highly detailed, high-quality art pieces. The extracted style that came from it is not taking the metal layer that would create a scene. The extracted styles are kind of describing the scene in a lot of ways and not the style such that we could create a completely independent original image with the same aesthetic while being completely different. We need to find a better way to extract the composition of the image and understand how mid-journey is doing this from the way that they take the style away from the image itself and are able to apply it to other images that are completely original. We need to analyze and do deep research on how that mechanism works for mid-journey and apply it to our methodology here. We are creating a very highly detailed extracted style prompt that can be independent of the image that it came from and that won't pull in core physical details of the original image into the new image.
For example, for the cosmic architecture within the scene of Olly and Dot that was generated with this prompt, there is the same exact kind of geological formation with intricate layers that is just popping out in the background of the image, like it's an afterthought. It didn't take the core realism and epic magnitude of the original image in the blended reality. It didn't take any of that. This art deco style, the whole aesthetic that this image was styled with, is completely lost and just like this bland cartoon with a half afterthought stone in the background.
We need to completely rethink how we're extracting the style and make it way more fine-grained to really get the true vibe. Allow our images to easily exist naturally within that world, not be a replica of some very high-level components of it. We don't want to take the color palette that in and necessarily apply it to our image. The color palette is going to depend on the scene, but maybe there's something to do with the aesthetic of the color balance and the spectrum of colors that would look like in that world that could apply to any scene with any colors.
We need to get way more broad and also way more detailed and way more nuanced in the way that we're prompting the realism that is in these scenes and the fine-grain details. We need to do a much more heavy analysis on the image itself and really let the image maybe run Gemini and prompt it to do its finest grain detailed analysis on the image as possible, writing just like letting it really rip on writing all the different aspects of the style and the quality of the picture and anything that could help recreate that aesthetic. Let it be free to also include aspects of the image itself in the original, and then have it go through a second layer which is like removing the scene-specific qualities and taking it into that higher context.
I see there being multiple different roles that can be done by agents to really refine this process. I think it starts with the research and then is a prompting of the Gemini image analysis, and I think we should also try running the OpenAI Image 2 model to do the image analysis as well. Then go through a second layer of refining the prompt using maybe Claude code with a skill based off of the Midjourney style reference research on how we get that higher-level style and how we can recreate these really highly detailed, really magnificent types of scenes without getting locked into any of the core components and without any of our wording of the scene that we're trying to create with all in. Not letting any words from that prompt influence the style itself, so we can really just see how the style is coming through in this underwater world without our influence of any stylistic prompting.
Multi-layer extraction pipeline to replace the single-pass approach:
Deep research on Midjourney --sref mechanism — understand how style references are decomposed and transferred independently of content
Multi-layer extraction pipeline — Layer 1: unrestricted raw analysis (let Gemini describe everything). Layer 2: style distillation (strip scene-specific content). Layer 3: scene-independent refinement (abstract aesthetic DNA only)
Dual-model image analysis — run both Gemini and OpenAI for image analysis, compare and merge the strongest descriptors from each
Remove all cartoon/illustration language — purge "cartoon", "illustrated", "stylized" from character prompts and style blocks entirely
Test on both NB2 and NBP — compare generation quality across models to find the best fit for this approach
Codify as a reusable skill/methodology — formalize the refined pipeline into a Claude skill for consistent future use
